Awkward admission
One of the boys, the tallest among them, took a tentative step forward. “Miss Jane,” he started, his voice barely above a whisper. Jane tightened her grip on the bat, her steely gaze unflinching. “We didn’t mean no harm,” the boy quickly added, raising his hands in surrender. Jane’s eyebrows furrowed. “Then what were you doing on my property in the middle of the night?”
