The entries were sporadic, each one reflecting Charles’ struggle with an undisclosed ailment. Martha and Emily learned that Charles hadn’t abandoned them out of choice but necessity. He was sick, diagnosed with a rare and contagious disease that had no known cure at the time. He had been given a prognosis of merely a few years, but he managed to live beyond that.
