His heart pounded so loud it seemed to echo through the silence of the early morning. The lion took one more step, its majestic mane glistening in the rising sun. Douglas swallowed hard, his eyes locked with the lion’s gaze. He could see the rippling muscles beneath the tawny coat, the sinewy grace of a creature born to rule. His mouth was dry, his hands clammy with fear.
