Wrong focus
The arrival of the police gave Bill a sense of security. They would probably know what to do now. Bill just wanted this bag to be gone, and the officers were a way to do that. But instead of focusing on the front yard, Bill should have paid closer attention to the back of the room. Because without him noticing, his girlfriend was doing something very suspicious there. Something with huge consequences.
