He assigned himself to get rid of the evidence. That’s why he repainted the car. More importantly, that was why he wanted the vehicle demolished in the first place. The evidence would have also been destroyed if the car had been crushed into a cube, like it was supposed to. And by painting the car beforehand, he already clouded the police aspect of this case, making it easier for him to slip away.
