Maddy opened her mouth to answer, but the homeless man beat her to it. “I-It’s okay, mister,” he stammered. Maddy realized he didn’t want her to get in trouble. The homeless man explained that Maddy had given him ten dollars. Maddy’s father looked at her in surprise. “Where did you get that money?” he asked.
