As they traveled, it became clear that staying hidden wouldn’t be easy. Derek spotted a black SUV parked at a gas station they passed, its windows tinted and engine idling. “That’s them,” he said through gritted teeth. “They’re tracking us.” Maddy tightened her grip on the wheel, her knuckles white. “What do we do?” she asked. Derek glanced at the map. “We need to lose them before we reach the rendezvous. Take the next exit.”
