An old mattress, with some blankets, and a makeshift table fashioned from scrap wood. Next to it was a small stove, clearly salvaged from the ship’s kitchen. The old man had rigged it to burn wood, which he broke off bit by bit from the boat’s interior. “The stove’s my lifeline during the coldest months.”
