His sense of smell
Wilson instantly pushed his snout down when the cover was out of the way. The people surrounding the dog could hear him sniff the air deeply. There clearly was something important inside that drain; otherwise, this dog would not have acted this strangely. At that point, nobody knew what it was, but it would be Wilson who would guide their way.
