Carl stepped through the other side of the object and saw his crew still staring at it, mystified. But he ignored the object and walked straight to the hole they’d dug. He looked down into the pit the crane had opened and noticed something that confirmed his growing suspicion—something unusual carved into the wall of the deep, dark excavation site.
