Initial hope
The pilot, now 89 years old, was still alive and never lost hope that someone eventually would find them. He explained how, after their emergency landing, they had used the life rafts to reach the island. At first, they hoped for a quick rescue, but as the days turned to weeks and then months, they realized no one was coming soon. So, they built a new life here.
