With the pilot’s blessing, the islanders prepared to leave their homes. There were tearful goodbyes, especially for those who had grown up on the island and were now leaving the only place they had ever known. But there was also excitement—a sense of hope for the future that had been absent for so long. Over 80 people joined the Navy crew on their ship that day.
