Padded lock
The briefcase had a small padded lock to prevent it from falling open. This was only a minor hindrance though, since it could easily be pried open with a long Allen wrench by applying leaver pressure. So that was precisely what Carla did. She grabbed some wrenches normally used for bicycle maintenance and placed one of them between the lock and the briefcase.
