They left their walkie-talkies on so that Carla could listen in from the safety of their boat. She gripped the edge of the railing, trying to catch every word as the officers climbed the ladder of the large floating ship. She heard their footsteps clattering up the metal stairs, the sounds of doors creaking open, and then voices, faint but clear, as they called out to the crew on board.
