A sonar mistake
One of the crew members had been distracted, just for a few seconds, but it was enough for them to miss the warning signs on the ship’s sonar. They had hit a coral reef—a hidden, jagged structure beneath the waves that tore a hole right through the bottom of their container ship. Water began seeping in, slow at first but steadily enough that they knew they were in serious trouble.
