The start of their plan
They needed a way to signal for help, to let someone know where they were and what had happened. They also needed to stay afloat for as long as possible so help could arrive before they sank. So they made a desperate choice. They began to lighten the load, dropping containers overboard to keep the ship from sinking too fast.
