The couple was hesitant to make another step; whatever was making this noise was standing in the staircase area of their home. Their living room was on the first floor, which was linked to a staircase-type structure via the hallway they stood in. And in this hallway, they stood frozen. Only a doorway shielding them from the frightening noise behind it.
