After nearly five miles, the moose finally began to slow. It turned and let out a mournful, panicked call that echoed across the snowy field they were on. John’s heart clenched at the sound; it was unlike anything he’d heard before. “Stay in the car, Hailey,” he said sternly. Hailey nodded, understanding the seriousness in his tone. He opened the door and stepped out into the cold.
