Steam filled the bathroom as Jolene turned on the shower, letting the hot water calm her as she tried to wash away the worries on her mind. Maybe today would be different, she told herself. Maybe whatever was bothering Richard would finally lift. But when she stepped back into the bedroom, she was instantly confused. The bed was empty.
