Ethan’s heart pounded as his mind searched for another option. “Fine,” he said, his voice shaking. “Then tell me this—was a woman named Julia Harper brought here today? She was arrested at my wedding.” Ethan purposefully did not tell the clerk that it regarded his fiance since a personal connection might prevent this rule-bound woman from helping him. The clerk hesitated, then typed into her computer. After a moment, she frowned.
