With every minute, the ship became more visible, and the radar beeped faster, indicating that the vessel moved closer to their ship. One of the younger deckhands let out a nervous chuckle. “Think they’re lost?” he asked. “Maybe they need help?” It was a reasonable assumption—small boats sometimes suffered equipment failure, leaving their crews stranded at sea.
