John’s heart pounded as the officers stepped inside, their boots echoing softly across the hardwood floor. The first officer led the way with a flashlight, sweeping the beam across each corner as they cleared the rooms methodically. The house was eerily quiet, every creak of the floorboards loud in the silence.
