The lead officer glanced at his partner and gestured for him to get into position. “Alright, let’s do this carefully,” he whispered, voice steady. He reached for the attic hatch rope and gave it a firm tug. The wooden hatch creaked as it opened slowly, protesting like it knew what was coming. The foldable ladder slid down with a clunk. Then came a loud, heavy scraping sound from above—the unmistakable reaction of something disturbed.
