Seeing the bear

One officer climbed the ladder slowly, each step deliberate and quiet. He raised his flashlight and shone it into the attic space. The beam illuminated a massive brown bear curled in the far corner. Its body shifted slightly, and its eyes caught the light, glowing amber in the dark. “Big one,” the officer muttered under his breath, motioning for his partner to be ready. The bear stared back, watching them both with weary suspicion.
