John raised his phone, flashlight on, and started climbing. The ladder groaned beneath him. His head broke the attic floor line, and he shielded his face, half-expecting to get attacked. But the space was still—until his phone rang. Loud. Echoing. It shattered the silence. From the darkness ahead, something roared. Not a squeak. Not a hiss. A full-on, deep-chested roar.
