A unpleasant smell

The smell thickened quickly, wrapping around them like a damp cloth. It was strong, unpleasant, and clung to their noses with every breath. “That’s sulfur,” Tom said, pulling up his sleeve to cover his face. “What’s sulfur doing down here?” Charles didn’t have an answer. He looked around, eyes narrowed. The air was warm and heavy, hard to ignore. Their boots crunched over the gravel floor as they stared ahead into the dark, looming tunnel.
