Finding first clues

As they walked farther in, the air became noticeably warmer. The light from their flashlights revealed strange patterns along the walls—lines, marks, and scrapes that didn’t look random. “See that?” Tom whispered, pointing to a wall nearby. “Those are straight lines, like scrapes.” Charles stepped closer, shining his light directly at the markings. They weren’t scratches from rocks or roots. The lines were neat and deliberate. Someone—or something—had definitely been down here before them.
