A real danger looming

“It must’ve only damaged the soil near the river for now,” Charles said quietly. “But if that ceiling gives way and the river breaks through, we’ll drown here.” Both men stood still, listening to the steady drip of water. Beneath their feet, puddles were forming with a sickly yellowish film on the surface. It shimmered in the light like oil. The sight was deeply unsettling and only confirmed their growing sense of real danger.
