Both men crouched to inspect the oily water more closely. The yellow film floating on the surface gave off an even stronger sulfur smell. It stung their nostrils and made breathing more difficult. Tom gagged and nearly threw up, stumbling back as he stood. Charles covered his face with his arm, eyes wide. Whatever was in that water wasn’t natural—it was chemical, rotten, and threatening. They both knew one thing for sure: this wasn’t safe.
