As they moved deeper into the tunnel, the ground beneath them changed. The dirt got darker, moist in some places, and even black. A shallow puddle had formed in a low dip, bubbling slightly like it was alive. “That’s gas,” Tom warned, stepping carefully. “Watch your step.” The smell was almost unbearable now—a thick mix of sulfur and something sharper, more chemical. It bit at their noses and made breathing harder with every step.
