They followed the pipe for a short distance, noting more metal scraps scattered across the ground. Rusted bolts, corroded valves, and snapped cables lay half-buried in the dirt. “Someone built this whole system,” Tom said, keeping his voice low. “It’s not natural. This was all man-made.” Charles’s thoughts raced. Had his land been used without his knowledge? For how long? And what had they done down here? The more he saw, the worse it felt.
