The tunnel walls were wet now, sweating from moisture that dripped steadily to the ground. It felt like the whole place was alive—breathing, pulsing with heat. Charles paused. “Do you hear that?” he asked quietly. Tom nodded. A low hum echoed through the tunnel. It wasn’t natural. It sounded like machinery—slow, steady, mechanical. Something was running deep within the earth. Neither of them said it, but both were thinking the same thing: they weren’t alone.
