The Drop Test

A firefighter stepped forward, curious. He picked up a rock and held it over the edge. “Let’s see how far down this goes,” he said, half joking. He dropped it. The town held its breath. One second. Two. Three. Ten. Then—clack. A faint, distant sound. The kind that comes from far below. Someone whispered, “That’s too deep.” The firefighter didn’t answer. He just backed away.
