The creature’s body had texture — faint lines and swirls across its back, like someone had carved them into soft leather. Liam followed one with his fingertip. It reminded him of ancient carvings or fossilized shells. A ripple of goosebumps ran down his arm. This didn’t belong in any river he knew. And that made him wonder if it belonged anywhere at all.
