Liam kicked off his sneakers and waded through the chilly, knee-deep river. His pants got soaked instantly, but he didn’t care. He couldn’t take his eyes off the thing lying on the far side. The mud sucked at his steps like it didn’t want him to get closer. Halfway across, he hesitated. But that weird lump hadn’t moved. He pressed on anyway.
