Rachel nodded. “It wasn’t fair. I know. But something in me just… snapped. I needed to figure out who I was without you for a minute. I’d lost myself in our life, in being okay. And I wasn’t.”
Silence sat between them like a third presence. Finally, Marc asked, “Do you want to come home?”
She shook her head gently. “Not yet. Maybe not at all. I need time. I still care about you. But I had to leave to be honest. I never wanted to hurt you. I just couldn’t lie anymore.”
