If you are expecting your newborn baby – congratulations!
This is arguably the most exciting time period of your life and you have so much joy waiting for you in the months and years to come.
However, there might be something on your mind in the build-up to the arrival of your baby.
The nursery. And how to design it.
Creating your baby’s nursery is something you might be spending a lot of sleepless nights thinking about, and this makes a lot of sense. Your baby will spend the majority of their time in there, they will sleep in there, and they need to feel comfortable to do so there.
Having a calm, sleeping baby is the absolute best thing that can happen to a new mom. It affects your mood and sleep too, and it can make the whole journey a lot easier.
So, with that in mind, here are our top 4 tips to help you create a calm and relaxing environment for your newborn baby.
Use the colour blue
Don’t get too hung up on gendering colours, sticking to the colour blue will help your baby feel relaxed and settled in their new environment, regardless of whether they are a boy or a girl.
The colour of things might seem like a minute issue and it might seem like something babies wouldn’t even register, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Studies have long shown that the colours of our environment have an important effect on our moods, concentration and sleep. And this is no different for babies.
Go for blues, especially light and pastel blues, for your walls, decorations, and amenities in your baby’s nursery and you should buy yourself some extra sleep down the line.
Consider your lighting
Lighting is another aspect that is very important for sleep and calmness. Try and keep excessively bright, and overhead lights to a minimum, and go for soft lights instead. This could be lamps, nightlights, and LED lights.
Softer lighting will help your baby get to sleep easier and it will help them feel less stressed during the daytime too.
Stay away from candles, diffusers and essential oils
When you think about creating a calming and relaxing environment for adults, one of your first thoughts is probably candles and essential oils, such as lavender and neroli.
However, you should avoid this in a baby’s room.
Essential oils, diffusers, and candles aren’t guaranteed to be ok for babies health and they should be something kept out of their immediate space.
Keep their room airy with lots of ventilation, and keep the candles for your room only.
Use soft flooring
Hard wooden or tiled floors will make everything louder and will produce more echoes. This is far less relaxing, especially for a baby.
Go for carpet where you can and, if not, opt for soft rugs.
This will soften the noise of footsteps and will help your baby stay asleep for longer.
It is also much nicer on their delicate feet when they start walking or crawling, and so it is an investment for later down the line too.
When it comes to creating your baby’s room, try not to get too hung up on expensive gadgets or the latest trends. Go for classic choices that are known to help and stick with the basics.
You won’t break the bank and you will have a happy baby.
Win-win!
