With the flashlight’s beam illuminating his surroundings, Carl focused on the hatch. It was a heavy, industrial design, worn from years of neglect, but now it was his only ticket out. Carl gripped the handle with both hands and pulled with all his might, his muscles straining against the immovable door. But no matter how much he tried, the hatch remained firmly sealed, as if mocking his attempt. He realized the avalanche outside must have compacted snow against it.
