On the drive home, the kitten—whom Jonathan had already named Sally—sat in a small carrier on the passenger seat. Occasionally, she mewed, and Jonathan reached over to reassure her with soft words. “This is going to be good,” he murmured, more to himself than to the kitten. “We’re going to get you ready for the best home ever.”
