No one moved, fear rooting them to the spot. Then, as if on instinct, one hiker broke into a run. It was a split-second decision, and suddenly, everyone else followed, legs pumping as adrenaline overtook reason. Tom’s voice carried faintly behind them, shouting, “Don’t run! Stay calm!” But he didn’t stop moving either.
